The Kottawa Arboretum, also known as the Kottawa Forest Reserve, is located in Galle. It is one of the closest rainforests to the city of Galle. This secluded area of lowland rainforest spans around 37 acres and showcases all the characteristics typical of a rainforest. The plant life consists of wet evergreen types, with tall trees striving to reach the sunlight, creating small canopies that block sunlight from reaching the forest floor. More than 170 species of trees have been recorded here, with approximately 100 being unique to Sri Lanka. Additionally, 70 different bird species inhabit the reserve, including 12 that are endemic. Visitors may also see stunning butterflies, the Purple-faced Leaf Monkey, the Toque Macaque, and the Giant Squirrel, which are common in the canopy. Among the reptiles, there are several non-venomous snakes and endemic agamid lizards found in Sri Lanka. Clean streams running through the forest are home to various fish, including many species that are endemic.
